Jurickson Profar's leadoff homer gets Padres started on big first inning; Mike Clevinger goes seven innings for second straight start
The Padres staked Mike Clevinger to a three-run lead in the first inning and then got out of the way for a while.a 4-1 victory over the Rockies on Monday night at Petco Park.
“A lot, a lot,” he said of the benefit of pitching with such a lead. “It just allows you to go attack more. You’re just not so worried about the solo home run. So you’re able to go attack with your best stuff and kind of stay in the zone and not be so nitpicky.” “I’d like to think that I was never not going to be that guy,” Clevinger said of recently returning to the form that made him one of the major leagues’ top pitchers from 2017-20. “There was a little stretch in time before I was picking up a baseball, then once I got the baseball in my hand, I really didn’t have a second doubt. I knew if I put in the work with the training staff that we have that we’re gonna get back to being me.
Jurickson Profar led off the bottom of the first inning with a home run — his third straight game with a homer. Manny Machado followed with a double, and Jake Cronenworth walked. A groundout by Luke Voit moved both runners up. Machado scored on Wil Myers’ groundout before Nomar Mazara followed with a grounder that hit first base and ricocheted toward the mound, allowing him to reach safely and Cronenworth to score.
