Giants' left-hander retires 21 in a row between second and ninth inning for first complete game against Padres this season
It was another fine outing by aLeft-hander Carlos Rodon set down 22 of the final 23 Padres batters he faced to finish a complete game in the Giants’ 3-1 victory Saturday evening at Petco Park.
The two-run homer meant Rodon would be rewarded with a win, and it prevented what would have been the Giants’ first sub-.500 record since they were 2-3 at the start of last season. Saturday was the sixth time this season Garcia has allowed the tying or go-ahead run in the eighth inning or later and the fifth time he has taken the loss in one of those games.
Darvish allowed a run on three hits and walked two in seven innings. Rodon walked the first batter of the game and allowed three singles in the second inning and nothing more until a two-out walk in the ninth. Singles by Jorge Alfaro and Nola began the bottom of the second, and Trent Grisham loaded the bases on a one-out single before José Azocar’s grounder to first base, which bounced off Belt’s glove for an error, tied the game. Ha-Seong Kim then grounded into a double play.
Darvish was not quite as efficient. There was no damage done by the three baserunners he allowed between the third and sixth innings, but he was up to 90 pitches by the time the top of the sixth ended. He threw 11 more getting through the seventh.
