In quest to stay ahead of hitters, Padres closer has altered slider, which is moving differently and traveling faster
Hader is back closing out victories on the regular, throwing hard, getting out after out practically uninterrupted.
That is what Hader, whose 0.91 WHIP is second-best all time and 43 percent strikeout rate is highest all time among relievers with at least 1,300 batters faced in their career, is constantly working to do. This comes after he closed the regular season by allowing one unearned run and a .121 batting average and striking out 13 over 10 appearances and then allowed one hit and one walk and struck out 10 in 5 1/3 scoreless innings in the postseason.
Hader could feel something was wrong while still in Milwaukee, and Padres coaches saw on video warning signs in Hader’s delivery before he arrived. They let him make a few appearances in which he struggled before getting to work. That work was done mostly in the bullpen and weight room but also in some lower-leverage situations in games.
Hader has repeatedly shrugged off that period as merely something every pitcher goes through, even though it had been one of the most successful relievers in decades going through one of the worst bursts a reliever has ever had.“You always try and better yourself in any possible way,” he said. “Because if you don’t, you’ll get left behind.”
“I haven’t thrown it much right now,” he said. “I’m starting to get more confidence with it. But, of course, to get confidence with it, you’ve got to throw it.”
