Trio of Padres hear from Dodger Stadium crowd; Joe Musgrove strikes out two in scoreless inning
Joe Musgrove watched from across the diamond as the three Astros players on the American League All-Star team were being serenaded with an impressively long chorus of boos during pregame introductions.
“They love me,” said Machado, who is booed in almost every park the Padres play but especially so in massive Dodger Stadium, where he played for the home team the final months of the 2019 season. “... You come to a city that is your rival and right up the street, that’s just the beauty of baseball. It’s just fun. It’s a great stadium to play at.”
“I think for me what’s special is starting,” he said after his third start and first since 2018. “… It means you got voted in by the fans. I mean, that’s just beyond crazy. That’s the best.” “As soon as we continue to win games, I think it’s going to be more and more known across the country,” Machado said. “We’ve got a great squad out there.”Cronenworth used his phone to take video of Musgrove pitching and Machado’s at-bats. Musgrove, long out of the game, shot video of Cronenworth. Cronenworth also called pitches for Musgrove from the dugout.
He was booed as he walked to the plate and proceeded to hit a grounder up the middle that began a double play so impressive that Betts stopped on his way to the dugout, reversed course and fist-bumped A.L. second baseman Andres Gimenez. With the Dodgers’ Tony Gonsolin on the mound, the Yankees’ Giancarlo Stanton and Twins’ Byron Buxton homered to left field in back-to-back at-bats in the fourth to give the AL a 3-2 lead.
