Blake Snell became a more consistently effective pitcher when he leaned into the reality he is often going to walk a lot of batters

What if a pitcher walked more batters than anyone else yet yielded fewer runs than anyone else?

The Padres signed Yu Darvish and Joe Musgrove, the other two starting pitchers they acquired before the 2021 season, to long-term deals. But the club will only be left to lament that they did not capitalize on Snell reaching the level of excellence they anticipated when they acquired him from the Rays.

But the most significant change this year — and really since mid-May — is that Snell knows who he is and more than ever seems secure in what that means.Padres starting pitcher Blake Snell reacts after a pitch was called a ball in his Aug. 16 start.Snell has pitched at least six innings without allowing a run in seven starts this season, tops in the National League and second in the majors to Toronto’s Chris Bassitt. Snell’s 16 quality starts are tied for sixth most in the NL.

This philosophy is how he excels for his time in the game. This is how he is striking out 31.1 percent of the batters he faces, second in the NL. It is how he reads swings and sets up at-bats and is allowing an NL-low .191 batting average.“I’m pitching,” he said. “And if I run out of pitches, I run out of pitches. I’m here to pitch. I’m not here to, ‘Oh, let me navigate and get to seven, eight, nine.’ That’s not me.

What Snell is doing is leading the major leagues with a 2.50 ERA and allowing that MLB-low average while having struck out the third-most batters and, yes, walking an MLB-high 89 batters. What Snell is doing would seem impossible. And, fact is, no one has ever led the major leagues in ERA and walks in the same season.Snell has allowed nine fewer runs than any qualifying starting pitcher in the major leagues.

Snell has allowed the lowest batting average with runners on base in the major leagues. And that was pretty close to true even when he clearly was bothered by walking batters and would sometimes allow his bouts of wildness to lead to innings spiraling. It was a relatively frequent occurrence to see Snell begin a game with two or three or even four perfect innings and then have one inning get away from him, with multiple walks leading to multiple runs.
