The Who performs at the brand new headquarters of the Pace Gallery in Chelsea. The cover art for their new album, by British pop artist Peter Blake, was unveiled at the gallery's opening. The future of New York’s gallery business in Chelsea is here, and if there was any lingering doubt about the direction it will take, the Glimcher family put that to rest: It’s big.
The debut of the gallery’s New York City home is a substantial leap forward from founder Arne Glimcher’s strategy for the past six decades, during which he has built the power house into a global presence with seven locations, including Hong Kong, Geneva and Palo Alto. It’s also a turning point for the moneyed New York art world and the transformation of its premiere gallery neighborhood.
Marc Glimcher, who’s run Pace since 2011, made no attempt to shy away from the bigness of the moment, inviting a select crowd of about a thousand guests to meander through seven floors of the new headquarters, which offers public viewing areas, private viewing rooms and two event spaces, and treating them to performances from DJ Questlove jazz artist Graham Reynolds and a surprise acoustic performance by The Who.
“I wrote that when I was … 20?” Townshend told the crowd as a soft drizzle fell like a thin curtain behind the band. “I’m quite a bit older than that, but you know that song’s not about being kids it’s about the feeling you have feeling young. Through art. Through science. Through passion.”
