Pennsylvania Supreme Court Chief Justice Max Baer, 74, has died at his home near Pittsburgh. Justice Debra Todd, as the jurist with the longest continuous service on the court, now becomes its chief justice.
Pennsylvania Supreme Court Chief Justice Max Baer, 74, died at his home near Pittsburgh, the Administrative Office of Pennsylvania Courts said in a statement Saturday morning. The cause of death was not disclosed.
Justice Baer previously had served as a family court judge in Allegheny County prior to his election to the state Supreme Court in 2003. He had served as chief justice since 2021. In a statement, Pennsylvania House Speaker Bryan Cutler, lauded Justice Baer’s service on the court, which he said would “have a lasting impact in the future.”
House Democratic Leader Joanna McClinton, who represents Philadelphia and Delaware County, called Justice Baer “a giant in the Pennsylvania legal community.”
