Shippensburg University was among the five Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education that saw an increase in enrollment this fall. File/Dan Gleiter | [email protected] enrollment in Pennsylvania’s 10 state universities continued its downward slide for a 13th consecutive year but leaders of the State System of Higher Education see signs of progress as they work to reverse that trend.

The system’s overall enrollment this fall totaled 82,688, a 2.2% decline from the previous fall and a far cry from its 2010-11 high-water mark of about 119,500 students. But that is the smallest year-to-year percentage decline in four years as the student count continues its recovery from the impact the coronavirus had on higher education enrollments in Pennsylvania and nationally.

“While we are still facing challenges from COVID, the increased investments from the commonwealth and ongoing system redesign efforts have allowed for the fifth consecutive year of tuition freezes,” he said. “We are headed in the right direction and the new student enrollment growth for the second year in a row is the result.”has made the system universities more attractive to students as that has opened up the gap between their cost to attend and the least expensive four-year option.

Commonwealth’s total enrollment declined by 985 students to 11,108 although its first-year student count this fall rose by 11.8%, to 2,441. PennWest’s total student count dropped to 11,305, down 1,473 students. Its first-year student numbers also declined by more than 20% to 1,617. Despite the enrollment declines, Greenstein remains confident both of those universities are on track to show improvement.
