Demand seemed heavy on the first weekend of legal weed sales in New Jersey, when a line of 60 buyers stretched outside a location in Bloomfield in addition to the capacity crowd inside.
Singh, 28, who lives about 10 minutes away in Belleville, said he works during the week as a painter in an auto body shop, so Saturday hours make scoring much more convenient.Six hours after RISE’s special 6 a.m. opening on the first weekend ofthe line outside the Essex County location stretched 60 customers long, in addition to the capacity crowd of 75 already inside.
The store manager at RISE referred any questions to a spokesperson for the store’s corporate parent, Chicago-based Green Thumb Industries, or GTI. A spokesperson for the company, Briana Dougherty, declined to comment Saturday. Buyers then lined up to pay, waiting a minute or so at a counter for their order to be retrieved from a storage area in back.
Things didn’t got well at all of the locations on Saturday. At the Botanist in Williamstown, a Gloucester County dispensary, a verbal altercation at about 3 p.m. broke out between a medical marijuana user and a recreational buyer inside. Things got physical when a security guard intervened, and only calmed down after bystanders called police.
