After a series of court rulings, Outokumpu Stainless has required the Mobile County Public School System and other city school systems to pay over $4 million in overpaid taxes from the past four years. The company's massive plant in Calvert was found to have overpaid, impacting local revenue.
“Our attorney said that it was something that we needed to go ahead ,” board Vice President Sherry McDade said after the vote.
“We want to make sure that our students in Mobile County are given the opportunity to do the things that they can, and the only way that they can do that is we have to make sure that they have material and supplies to go forward with this,” she said. “And taking $3.1 million again is going to be a big hit for out of our schools.”
Outokumpu also won adjustments to the value of furniture and equipment for three years – to the tun of almost $220 million
