Outlander star Caitríona Balfe says she thinks Season 7 would be a good place for the series to end. 'We will have hit the almost 10-year mark by the end of that, which feels like a nice kind of time frame... Those decisions are far above my pay grade.'
Outlander star Caitríona Balfe says that, while she doesn't know exactly what producers are thinking, the long-running show could end after season 7. Outlander, which is based on the Diana Gabaldon novel series of the same name, premiered on Starz in 2014. Balfe stars as Claire Randall, a World War II nurse who is sent back in time to 1743 Scotland at the time of the Jacobite rising.
Outlander has already been officially confirmed to continue for two more seasons. Outlander season 6 has already been completed, and will begin airing its eight episodes weekly on March 6. Season 7, which will be an expanded set of 16 episodes that covers Gabaldon's seventh novel,"An Echo in the Bone," is beginning production later this year.
"We will have hit the almost 10-year mark by the end of that, which feels like a nice kind of time frame, but we don’t know. Those decisions are far above my pay grade." Narratively, Outlander definitely still has plenty of new avenues to go down. There are currently nine extant novels in the series, so there is still potential to cover the events of 2014's"Written in My Own Heart's Blood" and 2021's"Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone." There is also a collection of spinoff novels following the character of Lord John Grey, who is played by David Berry in the series, which could be mined for future Outlander plotlines.
Although Balfe clearly enjoys making Outlander, it's possible that 10 years of playing the character has felt like enough to the actress. Indeed, Balfe's IMDb is limited to only 13 total credits because the series has taken so much of her time. This year, the actress had the opportunity to star in Kenneth Branagh's semi-autobiographical film Belfast, and she may want to expand her film career more in that direction.
