While other newsrooms in the state cut back their staffing, for the second year in a row we are adding positions. This year, it is about sports coverage.
Every summer, as football season looms, we brainstorm ways to improve coverage, and this year we’re expanding in two areas.
The first area where we are expanding is sports betting. Ohio will have legal sports betting in January, and to ease readers into that new arena, our writers are publishing extra pieces this year through the prism of betting. Then, in the days after the game, they’ll publish pieces about how they fared and where they stand for the season.to provide additional sports betting content, including picks, analysis, tools and, once betting is legal, sportsbook offers where readers can begin to wager. XL Media also will provide basic explainers about how sports betting works for the uninitiated.
For many people, though, betting on the games they long have watched will add a dimension to their fandom, and we think the expertise of our writers and columnists will help readers make informed bets. It’s one more reason why subscribing to The Plain Dealer orThe second area where we are expanding is an idea we’ve had in the works for a couple of years. We’re going to cover the Cincinnati Bengals like we cover the Cleveland Browns. We hear you. But we’re not covering the Bengals for you.
How do we do that? We think we start with the Bengals. We wondered what would happen if we took the strategies for our most successful content sector – the Browns – and used them with a new team. Could we generate the same sort of audience? Without cutting into our bottom line?
