Hot car summer forces us to choose between being comfortable and getting where we need to go.
. But seeing the electric crossover's range instantly plummet when I turn on the A/C has me apprehensive to use it. Having to decide between distance and comfort might make me lose my cool.
An example: I hopped in with the battery at a 30 percent state of charge and 75 miles of range with the climate control off. Merely activating the A/C took away five miles, bringing my need to plug in a little bit closer.How bad could it get? After completing a fast charging session to 90 percent battery, I set the A/C to 66 degrees and cranked the fans to level eight, the maximum. The 240 miles I'd had suddenly became 188—a reduction of more than 20 percent.
Now, that reduction was with the fans on full blast for the entire cabin, excessive for just me aboard. The Ioniq 5, like many EVs, has a"Driver Only" mode that turns off the vents except those pointed at whoever's behind the wheel. Activating it raised the range to 208 miles, a 10 percent improvement. Reducing the fans to a more reasonable level 2 upped the range to 220 miles, and sufficed to keep me comfortable.
This heat makes two features found in our high-end Limited trim Ioniq 5 worth mentioning. One is the panoramic glass roof, which has remained closed lately, as opening it would let more sunlight in—and thus, require the climate control to work harder and further reduce range. The other is the ventilated front seats, which don't feel like they do much. That's unfortunate considering their energy draw is much less than the air conditioning.
For those who want to optimize energy use, the Ioniq 5's infotainment system has a screen showing real-time and total drive electrical consumption for the powertrain, climate, and other functions. However, those numbers change so rapidly that I found looking at them more distracting than anything, and too esoteric to inform my driving—unlike seeing how much range disappears when I turn on the A/C.
