Opinion: 'True Detective’s' most recent season poked fun at its craziest fans
Stephen Dorff, left, and Mahershala Ali anchor the third season of HBO's"True Detective." By Sonny Bunch Sonny Bunch Bio Follow February 27 at 10:52 AM Spoilers for the entirety of the most recent season of “True Detective” appear beyond this point; please consider yourself warned.
Like the much-beloved first season, the most recent offering jumped back and forth through time, following a pair of detectives trying to solve a case that has haunted them for years. Set in Arkansas and skipping between three years — 1980, 1990 and 2015 — this season followed Wayne Hays and Roland West as they attempted to ascertain the fate of the daughter of Tom and Lucy Purcell .
Leaving aside the intricacies of the plot , one is struck by the power of the performances. Ali excels as Wayne; there’s a reason he’s a two-time Oscar winner. There’s also something fascinating about the way Pizzolatto handles Wayne’s dementia: It’s a sort of time travel, a slippage into the past. Wayne will at times look into nothingness, the camera then cutting a younger version of the man contemplating some dilemma.
It’s a wrenching moment, a quiet tour de force by Dorff that drives home the fact that family is the most important thing in this season of “True Detective.” It is the shattering of a family that propels the story forward, the creation of a family that gives Wayne anchors as he floats through time in his own mind, the failure to settle down that leads Roland to adopt a pack of stray dogs in order to create a simulacrum of family.
