Opinion: Starbucks doesn't pay enough to live in San Diego — even for a teenager [Opinion]

Thus, in order to be able to pay just rent in San Diego, a Starbucks barista would need to work around 179 hours a month, or about 44.7 hours a week, which is over full-time.than those in other states. I remember during a slow 10 minutes at work, my co-worker and I discussed how he was struggling with paying for his rent, gas and food. He talked about how he was living paycheck to paycheck, no longer able to go anywhere besides work, and was needing to find a second job.
The multibillion-dollar corporation does offer considerable benefits: medical and dental insurance, help with loans for college, discounts on Starbucks products, and, my personal favorite, free Spotify Premium. Yes, these benefits, which apply to both part- and full-time workers, are definitely perks. However, they don’t work as well as you’d think — they aren’t automatic. There’s an almostdiscussing all of the benefits and what a partner has to do to be considered eligible for each one.
From engaging in discussions, I’ve realized that a common misconception is Starbucks workers get paid enough even though we make just about minimum wage. Regardless of the pay, we love our jobs. That’s why we stay. It’s refreshing to make connections with people I otherwise wouldn’t. I look forward to taking and making orders, handing out drinks, and catching up with regulars.
