Saskatchewan community health experts urge people to take steps to reduce the spread of the latest Omicron wave in the absence of data.

Dr. Nazeem Muhajarine is a professor of community health and epidemiology at the University of Saskatchewan. Photo taken in Saskatoon, SK on Monday, February 22, 2021.Looking around Saskatchewan this summer, you might think the COVID-19 pandemic is a thing of the past. Apart from a few diehards wearing masks and some faded signs on store windows asking people not to enter if they are ill, there is little evidence of the pandemic that took over our lives in March 2020.

The past two years and four months have taught us a lot about pandemics. We know the situation can worsen very rapidly. We know that other places where the spread is farther along can give us a good idea of what to expect next. The government would also like us to believe that Omicron produces only mild illness. But there is more to COIVD than the initial acute disease.

What we do know is that the BA.5 subvariant has mutated so much that it is hardly recognized by antibodies produced by previous infection or by vaccination received more than a few months earlier. At the same time, vaccination alone will not get us out of the pandemic. Rather, a “vaccines-plus” approach is needed, bolstering our defences with public health measures in addition to vaccination.
