Opinion: San Diego should ban flavored tobacco products, menthol cigarettes [Opinion]
The American Heart Association is working to end the sale of all flavored tobacco products, including menthol cigarettes, in the city of San Diego.
The tobacco industry specifically targets our youth, communities of color, and the LGBTQ+ community with menthol-flavored tobacco products that make it easier to start and harder to quit. Today, nearly two-thirds of high school students who use e-cigarettes use mint or menthol flavors. Nearly 90 percent of African American smokers and 45 percent of Latino smokers use menthol products.
This issue is especially close to my heart. I’m an African American woman and have experienced the negative impact to our community. I lost my dear grandmother and other friends and loved ones due to tobacco use. Tobacco products are more accessible than healthy fruits and vegetables. San Diego residents deserve to be protected from flavored tobacco, especially menthol cigarettes. Let’s make that a reality for our city.
