Opinion: San Diego's never-ending Tijuana sewage disaster not getting the attention it deserves [Opinion]
The never-ending nightmare of cross-border sewage fouling the water and closing shores from Imperial Beach to Coronardo returned with a fury this week after the rupture of a large pipeline in Tijuana near Smuggler’s Gulch over the weekend. At least 135 million gallons of treated and raw wastewater have reached the U.S.
This is only the latest in a series of appalling reminders of the complete failure of the states of California and Baja California and their respective nations, the United States and Mexico, to fix an uncomplicated infrastructure problem that U.S. cities readily mastered in the. The challenge facing these governments isn’t akin to the Manhattan Project or to efforts to cure cancer. This is why seemingly good news in recent years has fueled hopes that much better days were just around the corner.
