Opinion: Moving from Syria to America taught me how to carry two cultures [Opinion]
It fascinated me, and I have tried to grasp every opportunity to celebrate and enjoy it. After a painful divorce, seven years later I remarried and was able to make a new beautiful blended family that has a rich multicultural background. We proudly represent Indigenous, Pacific Islander, Vietnamese, Nicaraguan, Arab and Caucasian people. We sew these multiple threads together with a tasty variety of foods at the dinner table.
Another similar incident occurred at my current job. During my first week, while distributing the mail, a nice gentleman came in and inquired about my last name, Aziz. He asked if I was related to someone, who just happened to be my sister. It turns out that he was a Fulbright scholar who was studying Middle Eastern history in Damascus and my sister, who worked at the United States embassy there, had helped him.I consider myself to be “Syrian to the bone,” but am also very proud to be American.
