Opinion | It’s been 10 days since Bloomberg officially declared his candidacy for president and he’s already performed a political miracle: He’s made Trump look fair-minded, consistent and rational

this policy “troubling and wrong,” and found it dirty pool for Bloomberg News to stop investigations of Bloomberg’s fellow Democrats, some of whom hold high political office, but maintain the usual scrutiny of Trump.Parscale made uncommon good sense, even if you have some sympathy with the position Bloomberg News suddenly finds itself in.

Micklethwait’s convoluted justification suggests the decision to exempt Bloomberg from coverage probably came first—straight from Mike’s brow—and it was left to Micklethwait to play Twister with the edict until he pretzeled together a rationale. Billionaires are a lot like celebrity architects: They imagine something they think will look pretty, and then leave it to structural engineers to devise the foundation and gridwork that will make it stand.

Bloomberg’s cavalier relationship with Bloomberg News, his willingness to kick the can down the road and make up new justifications as he goes along, reminds us why tycoons and moguls make terrible national leaders. They’re rich, they think the world revolves around them and they don’t routinely encounter anyone who disagrees. Bloomberg’s behavior also mirrors that of Trump, who in January 2016 publicly promised to put his assets in a “” run by his children and executives.
