Opinion: Memorial Day wasn't always called that, but its significance has remained untouched [Opinion]
The origin of Memorial Day, first observed over 155 years ago when it was known as Decoration Day, was to beautify the graves in memory of those who fought and died to preserve our union during the Civil War.
Their final resting place should not be the only space we gather, share memories or sit in quiet contemplation. To truly honor their lives, we must share their stories with others and ensure their memories live on even though they are gone. In communicating our shared grief over this soul taken too soon, we — as his brethren, as fellow veterans and as Americans — have realized that more can be done to combat the crisis of veteran suicides. Every American can play a part in preventing another death like his and in honoring his memory by helping those who have served this country.
