Opinion: Differentiate anti-Asian hate crimes and the causes of U.S. gun violence [Opinion]
” : As an Asian American, while I do appreciate the outpouring of sympathy after the tragic shooting in Monterey Park, I feel it has been overlooked as part of the collective concern about the lack of common-sense gun laws.
Simply because the incident occurred during an Asian holiday, in an Asian community, where all those killed including the shooter were of Asian descent, should not reduce the focus to an Asian community crisis. What is an Asian crisis, however, is America’s ongoing history of anti-Asian xenophobia, which has resulted in an uptick in hate crimes, more recently, with the public stabbing of an 18-year-old Asian student at Indiana University and a pattern of physical assaults targeting our vulnerable elderly citizens.We must distinguish between the causes of racially motivated anti-Asian hate crimes and the causes of targeted gun violence.
