By the early 1960s, brothers were installing Pesco, Adel and Bendex pumps and aircraft hydraulic cylinders in their vehicles. They were purchasing fittings and hydraulic parts from Goodrich & Main, a local military surplus store. At that time, there were no hydraulic shops to do the work. You had to know a welder and install it yourself.OG Leonard Campbell had a 1964 Corvair with full hydraulics. His friend Leroy Davis had a 1959 Volkswagen that had a full hydraulic setup.
Other men who set the bar with the awards they won for showing their lowriders were: Leroy Brown, owner of a Cadillac he named “Lay Lady Lay”; Keith Dunn aka Black Jesus; Craig Allen; Terry Wallace; Big John Landers; Jarvis Landers; Clarence Davis aka Jr.; Richard Thomas; Donald Cook, the owner of a 1963 Impala Wagon he called “Traella, Do What I Tella” that was known for out-hopping most cars; Donald Carter aka Boss Hog; and Lonzo Turner.
By the 1980s, a new generation of lowriders kept the culture going strong in Southeast San Diego thanks to the members of quite a few car clubs. There were The Bachelors, Ebony, Bureau, International, Finest, Pinto Players CC and Unlimited CC. A lot of these young men were in high school. The lowriders gathered at the Big Bear Market, Jack in the Box and Union Bank parking lots on Federal and Euclid Avenues.
