Opinion: Being a tall, Black, nonbinary, transgender femme drag queen makes me a target for violence [Opinion]
It makes me question these pathways, makes me long for a new solution — and new solution makers. It makes me wish for solutions that don’t prioritize property over lives, solutions that don’t protect crooked cops and systems that empower them, a solution that doesn’t continue to put guns in the hands of people given to hatred and contempt for others, a solution that brings us together and doesn’t seek to divide itself in its own self-interest.
So here I am, left to find solutions on my own. Here I am, left to pick up the pieces of a tragedy once again, as many of us who are called to this activist work must do. Where is the support we so desperately cry out for? Where are the people who say they want to help? Where are the actions we are promised by those in positions of influence and power? Where are the actions that yield real change?
Each and every time, I find my answers in community. It is in this that I find strength. It is in this that we all find strength. We go back to our sacred spaces and continue to rebuild, continue to push back, continue to mobilize our rage and heartbreak for our community because in the words of the great queer ancestor and activist legend Audre Lorde, “The master’s tools will never dismantle the master’s house.
It’s time for new solutions and new leaders because the old ones continue to yield broken results and broken hearts.
