Sen. Todd Young's bipartisan legislation gives Indiana's economy a boost while making America less reliant on foreign countries for technology needs, writes Robert Vane, the principal at Veteran Strategies Inc.

In 1971, President Richard Nixon shocked the political and geopolitical world by announcing he had accepted an invitation to visit Communist China. Friend and foe alike were stunned this dedicated Cold Warrior would consent to travel to one of America’s most implacable foes.

For too long, China has controlled some of the most vital aspects of the American economy, including our supply chain, while actively lobbying Congress to keep its selfish interests and economic advantages intact. “We need to be sufficiently independent in these matters so that when a global pandemic or economic and military crisis occurs, the United States won’t be reliant on foreign actors,” said Young.

Asked if this landmark, bi-partisan legislation could be a model for future collaboration among members of Congress, Young, who faces re-election, replied with optimism: “Yes, it will, plus there are many other mission critical industries needing our help and support.”My time with Young also reinforced my belief that he remains the same person he was when I first met him more than 15 years ago.
