Fadel Tankoano received a U.S. passport as a baby, but decades later immigration...
Fadel Tankoano, of Houston, was sworn in as a naturalized U.S. citizen after a years-long legal fight with the government. Despite being born in New York and enlisting as a citizen, immigration officials said Tankoano wasn't a citizen just before his deployment in South Korea ended in 2020.A Houston soldier who three years ago was threatened with being deported to Africa amid claims that he lied about his U.S. citizenship was naturalized Tuesday and became a citizen.
Tankoano, who is the son of a Nigerien diplomat and was born in Manhattan, enlisted in the Army in 2018. He applied for a new passport in 2019, only to be told he wasn't a U.S. citizen. The State Department argued that because Tankoano's father was a diplomat with immunity, he was exempt from U.S. laws that bestow birthright citizenship.according to a Washington Post articleHe was issued a U.S.
"I had to have patience; that's what got me through it," Takoano said Tuesday evening in a phone interview."It wasn't easy. I tried to follow all of my attorney's advice, like not to claim citizenship or say that I was an American, even if that's what I always believed myself to be." It's not clear exactly why the government agreed to drop its objections to Tankoano's case. In 2021, the White House pledged to address veterans who had been deported after their service ended. Last year, the Department of Veterans Affairs began contacting more than 100,000 non-citizen veterans with information about how to become citizens, according to NBC News.
