On LatinaEqualPayDay, four entrepreneurs share how mentors have shaped their negotiation tactics and how they hope to help the next generation of Latinas:
It takes Latinas about 23 months to make what a white man makes on average over the span of 12 months. The financial breakdown has Latinas making 54 cents to every dollar a white, non Latinx man makes.
The founder and President of Lean In Latinas, Anna Dapelo-Garcia, emphasizes that the power of communities help Latinxs find both the support and resources they need to help negotiate both a better salary and a more steady financial future. We decided that this year we would go bigger and louder to bring awareness to the issue. We partnered with The Riveter to host a series of events we’re calling “¡Págame! Pay Equity For All” at their spaces in Austin, Dallas and Los Angeles – cities where there’s a large population of Latinx.
Be confident and do not undervalue the work you’ve done that helps to increase your worth! I can’t believe the number of times I’ve spoken to a Latina who doesn’t vocalize the work she has done and thus doesn’t emphasize it as part of the negotiation process.
