In June, 2021, President Joe Biden announced this his administration would mount a “whole of government” effort to secure U.S. supplies and supply chains related to a raft of critical energy minerals.
These and other elements contained in what are essentially planning documents are good and needed parts of the overall process that would have to take place for the government to facilitate this massive envisioned transition. But it must be pointed out that it took the administration 8 months just to get to this point, a first step in what will be, if executed, a long, complex and challenging process.
There is also no time for the U.S. government to go backwards if this transition is to be achieved, but that’s exactly what the Biden administration has been doing over the last 8 months when it comes to actually issuing permits for the domestic production of these energy minerals., the CEO of ioneer, a company that has been working for over a decade now to line up the local, state and federal permits required to mine for lithium in a remote location in Nevada.
In its unending efforts to repeal or revoke every action taken by the Trump administration, Biden’s Department of Interiorwhere critical energy minerals are concerned on February 23. On that day, Interior Secretary Deb Haaland revoked the permit for a simple road that would provide access to the Ambler Mining District in Northwest Alaska.
Thus, I find myself writing once again about the existential conflict faced by this administration and the climate change lobby: Like a proverbial cake, they cannot have this energy transition and eat it, too. Despite the planning progress shown by the recent announcements by the White House and DOE, the eating side appears to be winning.
