Grammy-nominee Omar Apollo was a child of the digital age, and his rise to stardom is proof.
, a TikTok Future Icon award, the list goes on. Plus, he’s been on the road since early October on his Prototype Tour, in support of his critically acclaimed debut studio album, generation. Just three weeks ago, he woke up in a hotel room in Atlanta, full of friends and his manager, to the news of a Grammy nomination for best new artist. “It’s insane,” says Apollo with a proud smirk. He called his parents immediately. He mimics his parents’ accents, in his retelling of their beaming reactions.
Born Omar Apolonio Velasco, the son of two working-class Mexican immigrants, in Hobart, Indiana, Apollo was always an entertainer. Growing up, he uploaded videos of himself dancing to YouTube, an archive he’s surprised no one has unearthed yet, engaging in heated dance battles at quinceañeras that made him feel like “” and joining his church band. “I loved the visibility,” he says. He entered his school’s talent shows to dance but never to sing.

But it wasn’t enough to convince himself he could sing. So, he went online and searched “How to get vibrato,” the ability to quickly change pitch, but when he realized he didn’t have it he “was pissed.
In high school, Apollo bounced around from part-time jobs at McDonald’s, Jimmy John’s, and Guitar Center and began uploading his songs to SoundCloud. “I was an internet kid. I was so online,” he says. “I graduated with a 1.8 GPA,” he adds. “I had zero interest. I just wanted to make music.” Eventually, the music he was writing and producing from his bedroom gained a cult following.
