The 'notoriously sketchy' San Francisco McDonald's is getting a totally new tenant.

The new development, on the corner of Stanyan and Haight streets, is looking for a commercial master tenant to “build, manage and operate” the mini food hall. According to the, the space “will provide retail and commercial kitchen space for low-income, BIPOC and immigrant” food entrepreneurs. The expectation is for four kiosks to “provide workforce development opportunities,” the proposal says.

It seems the food hall concept is following the lead of what nonprofit food incubator organization La Cocina created atScreenshot via 730stanyan.org Along with the food hall, the housing aspect of the development is slated to provide the majority of its units to “low to moderate-income families, as well as families who have experienced homelessness.” The organizations behind 730 Stanyan are also determining whetherwill go toward older people or transitional age youth.

The former McDonald’s location was known for drug transactions as much as it was burgers and fries. In the summer of 2020, the empty lot was transformed into District 5’s first “safe sleeping site,” which gave shelter for unhoused people during the height of the pandemic, though only for a few months.
