As Wagner mercenaries staged a dramatic but short-lived uprising in Russia, a photo surfaced in Facebook posts that falsely claimed it showed Chinese President Xi Jinping in an"emergency meeting" to discuss the crisis. While China pledged to support Russia after the rebellion began, the picture was taken in September 2021, years before the mutiny in Russia. It shows Xi and China's top governing body meeting in Beijing for a reception on the eve of the country's national day.
"Chinese [leaders] brought together in an emergency meeting in the middle of the night because of Russia," reads a Korean-languageThe post surfaced after the chief of the Wagner mercenary group Yevgeny Prigozhin said his troops had of Rostov-on-Don -- a hub for Russia's Ukraine campaign -- and vowed to topple Moscow's top military leaders.well over 24 hours after the mutiny began, pledging its support for Russia's efforts in"protecting national stability".
But by the time the ministry issued its statement, the rebellion in Russia had been quelled, with the Kremlin announcing Prigozhin would leave for Belarus and that Moscow would not prosecute him or Wagner's members.The photo was also shared with the same false claim on Facebook
