The Exxon Valdez incident stood as the US' largest environmental tragedy, surpassed only in 2010, when an explosion on the Deepwater Horizon oil well drilling platform killed 11 workers and discharged millions of barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico.In response to the Exxon Valdez disaster, the US Congress passed the Oil Pollution Act, which requires that federal and state agencies work with the companies responsible for oil spills to assess the overall damage.
