The ship was on its way to Iloilo from Bataan with 800,000 liters of industrial oil.Two days later, the Princess Empress finally slipped beneath the waves, triggering what could be the country's worst oil spill since another tanker sank off Guimaras in 2006.As of Thursday, authorities were still scrambling to locate the Princess Empress, believed to be lying about 1,200 feet below the surface.
The Exxon Valdez incident stood as the US' largest environmental tragedy, surpassed only in 2010, when an explosion on the Deepwater Horizon oil well drilling platform killed 11 workers and discharged millions of barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico.In response to the Exxon Valdez disaster, the US Congress passed the Oil Pollution Act, which requires that federal and state agencies work with the companies responsible for oil spills to assess the overall damage.
