Oil from a supertanker decaying off Yemen's coast is finally being pumped onto another ship.
"The ship-to-ship transfer of oil which has started today is the critical next step in avoiding an environmental and humanitarian catastrophe on a colossal scale," Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a statement.
It is moored 3.7 miles from Yemen's western Red Sea ports of Hodeida and Ras Issa, a strategic area controlled by the Iranian-backedThe FSO Safer supertanker, loaded with 1.1 million barrels of Yemeni crude oil, has gone largely unmaintained since Houthi rebels seized control of the vessel from the Yemeni state-run oil company in 2015.The vessel has not been maintained for eight years, and its structural integrity is compromised, leaving it at risk of breaking up or exploding.
