Scammers used a computer code flaw to bilk Ohio's unemployment system out of more than $189,000, state officials announced Monday. The state also froze more than 28,000 accounts, meaning genuine account holders will have to go online or wait on hold for hours to regain access to their benefits. COLUMBUS, Ohio—Ohio’s unemployment office said Monday it’s paid more than $189,000 to scammers and frozen more than 28,000 accounts as the result of a flaw in their system’s computer code.
The flaw was “the root cause” of a surge in unemployment fraud attempts in recent weeks, according to a release from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.
