Here is what Ohio's senators want to do with your tax dollars.
Firstly, they want to give some of that money back to taxpayers, with about $2.5 billion in tax relief in the budget senate republicans rolled out.
Aid for students from families making higher income would be means-tested, but every student would be eligible for financial assistance worth at least 10% of the maximum scholarship.Earmarking public tax dollars for private schools, however, has been a controversial issue for years at the statehouse. Senate Democratic Leader Nickie Antonio of Lakewood expressed concern about the new expansion of private school scholarship vouchers.
“Paying private school tuition for wealthy families is not a good use of our education dollars, especially when the state is still trying to accomplish the full and fair public school funding that is required by Ohio’s constitution,” she said. “Programs that provide assistance for food, child care and Medicaid have eligibility cut-offs of 185%, 142%, and 156% of the poverty level, respectively. Food, child care, and health care are needs.
She also criticized the Republican plan for proposing “a long list of harmful changes” to the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program , and adding a provision that would compel the Department of Medicaid to request a federal waiver to establish work reporting requirements for Medicaid. “Food bank clients are already regularly skipping or cutting the size of meals to get by Eliminating increased funding to help workers, families, older adults, disabled Ohioans and marginalized people put food on the table, when the state of Ohio has incredible resources at its disposal, is cruel and short-sighted.”
