Phoebe, a permanent resident in the United States, was interviewed in my show, and she said she didn't want to go home anytime soon if the branded clothes, perfume, sunglasses and chocolates that she saved for would just be stolen at the airport.

MY column the other day on allegedly stolen items at the Manila International Airport got a lot of feedback from overseas Filipino workers. They wrote to me or sent messages to my nightly radio show, 'Pinoy Konek' at Radyo 5, 92.5 News FM, which deals with OFW lives.

And to a man — or woman — they notice the people packed like sardines in the commuter trains, the slow interval of the trains arriving and the trains' lack of upkeep, as well as the smelly toilets in the stations. The ticket offices also do not sell return tickets, or round-trip tickets, the way they do in other countries, so the commuters do not have to queue up again to buy a ticket for the return journey.
