A police spokesperson said two independent witness told investigators they saw or heard a struggle inside the vehicle.
A man handcuffed behind his back and sitting in the front seat of a police car was shot to death Monday in Maryland after a suspected struggle with an officer, authorities say.
The incident occurred in Temple Hills, a suburb of Washington, D.C., about 8 p.m. after police received a 911 call about a driver who struck multiple other cars, said Christina Cotterman, a spokeswoman for Prince George's County Police Department. When officers encountered the man, they smelled what they believed to be PCP, handcuffed him and placed him in the front passenger seat of the cruiser with a seat belt as they called in a drug recognition expert, CottermanCotterman said it was standard practice in the department for officers to place a suspect in the front passenger seat of a police vehicle.
An officer entered the driver's seat of the car before he fired his duty gun multiple times, Cotterman said. "Two independent witnesses tell our investigators that they see a struggle or hear a struggle of some sort coming from the cruiser, and they hear loud bangs," she told reporters.
