Community leaders celebrate completion of navigation center; first clients expected in a few more weeks
Oceanside celebrated the completion of its first year-round homeless shelter Friday, a 50-bed navigation center with an array of services to help the unsheltered get back on track to mental health, sobriety and security.
The Ocean Shores campus closed at the end of the 2018-19 school year because of declining enrollment, when it had 138 students. Some of the remaining students moved to the new Surfside Academy at the former Ditmar Elementary School in South Oceanside and others entered homeschooling programs. Homeless shelters sometimes generate controversy, but Oceanside residents largely supported the navigation center. The single significant point of contention arose over who should run the facility.
The nonprofit was founded in San Diego in 1955 by a group of church and business leaders to provide food, clothing and spiritual guidance to the homeless. “We know how to help people get off the streets,” Dee said. “You are going to see things happen here.”
