Justice Democrats, which aims to challenge more moderate Democratic incumbents, announced that Ocasio-Cortez will support Marie Newman’s bid to oust Rep. Dan Lipinski in Illinois' 3rd Congressional District
But Newman, as opposed to other incumbent challengers, has been blessed by more mainstream Democratic figures. Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand , Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren , as well as Washington Gov. Jay Inslee, have all endorsed her campaign.to Lipinski in the 2018 Democratic primary for his House seat by roughly 2,000 votes. He is one of the most conservative House Democrats and has long drawn ire within the party over his opposition to abortion rights.
Lipinski slammed Ocasio-Cortez’s endorsement of his opponent in a statement Tuesday, charging that the nod "makes crystal clear that Ms. Newman is an extreme candidate who is completely out of step with the voters" of his district, "who do not want to be represented by a fifth member of the 'Squad.'"
