Observation of a new type of self-generated current in magnetized plasmas NatureComms

\

) with the L-mode confinement, respectively. This discrepancy between the simulation and the experiment is sustained for longer than 2 s until NBI was applied which is longer than the current diffusion time,0.5 s in this experiment. It indicates a possibility of an additional steady source of the plasma current, rather than a transient phenomenon by unsaturated current diffusion.

To investigate the contribution of ions to this current, we checked the time evolution of the ion rotation. A previous studyshowed that the intrinsic rotation of ions could be generated in plasmas and its characteristics are strongly affected by the effective collisionality. The intrinsic rotation of the ions can induce the toroidal current even though the ion contribution is usually smaller than the electron.

Hometown Alaska: Touring the Alaska Museum of Science and NatureHometown Alaska: Touring the Alaska Museum of Science and NatureMountain View is known for its diverse community and neighborhood values. It is not just the people that make the community what it is, but the institutions they run, many of whom have been around for a significant amount of time: Clark Middle School, Hula Hands, the Boys & Girls Club, the Red Apple, etc. One less-spoken-of institution that has been a gem in Mountain View is the Alaska Museum of Science and Nature. This week on Hometown Alaska host Justin Williams steps inside and takes a tour to see what it's all about.
