A free music festival brings Oakland’s unhoused community to Mosswood Park.
OAKLAND – The sun was out. A cool breeze was blowing. It was the perfect day for some jazz and blues in the park. On Monday afternoon, the First Presbyterian Church of Oakland brought a free music festival to the Mosswood Park Amphitheater.
There are more than 5,000 unhoused people in Oakland, according to the 2022 Point-In-Time Count. That amounts to more than half of Alameda County’s total number. While the city has ramped up efforts in recent years to build more permanent supportive housing and provide services to homeless people, few initiatives have focused on bringing joy to the community. The Compassion in Action festival marked a unique attempt to do so.
For Oakland-born music enthusiast Michael Satterfield, who was unhoused for three years until 2021, an announcement at a county office and the inviting sound of jazz instruments led him to Mosswood Park on Monday afternoon. Tony LaPalmer, of Oakland, thanks volunteers while packing up food for himself during the Compassion and Action Festival held at Mosswood Park in Oakland, Calif., on Friday, May 26, 2023. The one day music festival was organized by The First Presbyterian Church of Oakland. The event was held for the city’s unhoused community between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. today.
