On Tuesday night, Huwe Burton’s story was featured in HBO’s Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel, which is where he interviewed the runner about his ordeal from prisoner to free man.
The segment introduces Burton as one of more than 2,000 people who were wrongfully convicted in just the last 30 years alone, according to the“The New York City Marathon, all 26.2 miles of it, is a long and grueling journey but it pales in comparison to the one already traveled by Huwe Burton,” Gumbel said in the episode. “He’s smiling through the pain of a memory that few could imagine but that he’ll never forget.
When the police arrived, Burton was questioned for hours. He had no representation and his father was visiting family in Jamaica at the time. When he confessed to his whereabouts, that he was at school and then at his girlfriend’s house before coming home, he said the police used that information against him.
The story made national news at the time. Burton was sent to Rikers Island and was indicted on the day of his mother’s funeral. He wrote a eulogy that was read at her service.
