The NYC Department of Correction is buying more than $90,000 in high-powered sub-machine guns for officers at Rikers Island. The purchase follows budget cuts where the department eliminated $17 million in job training and social services for detainees.

Marc Bullaro, a former assistant deputy warden at Rikers, said after Sept. 11, officers from the department’s Emergency Services Unit were posted on the Queens side of the bridge that leads to Rikers Island and armed with long guns. In addition, officers from that unit sometimes carry long guns when transporting high-security detainees, he said.
