The National Weather Service in Fort Worth is again expecting highs in the the Dallas-Fort Worth area to remain in the 100s this week.

NWS Fort Worth notifies the public of air quality alerts at the request of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. Allison Prater, a meteorologist for the weather service, said air quality is affected by hot weather and low winds.

“When we have lighter winds, ozone pollution is more favorable during this time, especially when there is less wind,” Prater said. “After a few days, air quality can really tank.”Prater said highs for most of this week will be above 100, with the hottest air temperatures and the heat index expected Tuesday and Wednesday.

Emergency medical services in the Dallas-Fort Worth area have seen an increase heat-related calls. At leastso far this summer because of heat-related illnesses, officials announced last week. MedStar, which provides emergency medical services to areas in and near Fort Worth, said 17 people were hospitalized Sunday because of heat-related illnesses. Of those, one person was in critical condition, according to the agency.
