What aggravates the deep, and destructively toxic, divisions is the fact that both sides are coming from strong emotional attachments to their preferred narratives.
THE divide that fractures the nation revolves around conflicting perceptions about martial law and the Marcoses. On one side are those who paint martial law in monolithic black, as undoubtedly the darkest moment in our country's history. On the other side are those who idolize the Marcos brand and legacy, and shift the blame on the alleged victims as literally deserving of the brute force they got from the Marcosian state for engaging in political violence against it.
This is not helped by those in the pro-Marcos base who actively peddle half-truths and historical fiction, like that of the tall tale of the Tallano gold, and who take advantage of their internet reach to mislead. We end up with the tragic consequence of having historical scholarship diminished because of the partisanship of scholars being matched by social media charlatans who freely produce content that does not bring us any closer to historical truth.
