A man has been charged with murder for a deadly shooting Saturday at an apartment complex in Northeast Austin. Edwin Emilson Diaz was arrested after Austin Police Department officers responded to reports of a shooting at a complex near the East Rundberg Lane and North Plaza intersection. Upon their arrival at around 1 a.m., officers discovered Cristian Raudales-Melendez, 26, with multiple gunshot wounds. Raudales-Melendez was rushed to Dell Seton Hospital but later died from his injuries.
According to court documents, an eyewitness reported a verbal altercation between Diaz and the victim. He said Diaz appeared to call someone to bring him a firearm and shortly afterward, several gunshots were heard. Diaz was then observed fleeing in the direction of his home. Diaz was located by officers at his apartment and was arrested on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. However, following Raudales-Melendez's death, the charges were elevated to murder. Further statements from Diaz's roommates revealed that he had admitted to the incident, with one roommate saying that Diaz claimed Raudales-Melendez had charged at him leading to the shooting, the arrest affidavit said.
