Protestors are demanding that the board hold a special meeting about the North Valley Military Institute lease with Los Angeles Mission College.

The school is under the jurisdiction of the Los Angeles County Office of Education , but it previously leased space to operate schools on two LAUSD campuses, one in Sun Valley and one in Sunland. The school turned down LAUSD’s lease offer for the 2023 to 2024 school year because it required them to scatter their classrooms across three separate campuses, NVMI Superintendent Ryan said.

“I would like some more information … about the fiscal solvency and the ability for this potential tenant to make their rent,” said LACCD Trustee Sara Hernandez. “I feel more comfortable checking in with LACOE in regards to what the status of the charter authorization is, if there is an audit, or what exactly that is, so that we can evaluate the tenant.

The audit is ongoing and has been expanded to examine allegations that NVMI is not paying into the California State Teachers’ Retirement System, said LACOE Public Information Officer Van Nguyen.
