solar eclipseWith millions of eclipse-chasing tourists expected in North Texas and many more waiting in anticipation for the celestial phenomenon, weather and climate experts shared how they’re tracking sky conditions in the region.
“When you get into the job that we do — forecasting the weather within the next seven to 10 days — it really is more about the actual weather systems, it’s no longer about seasonal influences like El Niño,” Ryan said.At that time, meteorologists will get a better sense of atmospheric conditions that will impact weather in North Texas. That’s also around the time the weather service is planning to start providing daily forecasts related to eclipse-viewing conditions.
“Not until we’re about a week out will we be able to say whether there will be low clouds or high clouds or any clouds in between,” Ryan said. “It can be anytime between 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on any given day, and it’s actually very difficult to forecast even sometimes the day before,” Ryan said. “We forecast those clouds quite a bit because they affect aviation. Pilots need to know when those clouds are going to break for flying conditions, so we have a lot of experience forecasting those types of clouds.”“If you want to know what numbers are going to come up on the roll of the dice, you need a meteorologist.
