A spike in sea surface temperatures in the North Atlantic may be due to a combination of climate change, El Niño and a lack of Saharan dust over the ocean

It isn’t clear what is driving the unusual heat in the North Atlantic, but the anomaly has sparked speculation among researchers. Climate change has probably contributed to some extent, says Lapointe.Another possible factor proposed byat the University of Pennsylvania is that there is less dust from the Saharan desert over the ocean than usual.

One anomaly that’s gotten a lot of attention is the North Atlantic, where we see warmth particularly in the eastern tropical/subtropical region of the basin. That appears to be tied to an anomalous dearth of windblown Saharan dust that normally has a cooling impact on the region.
