“We are concerned that we are already at a pivotal crossroads in the history of our country where democracy is at stake,” Haynes said. He is a member of the interfaith group, Faiths United to Save Democracy, which will be deploying 1,000 chaplains at polls across the U.S. Tuesday, including nearly 90 in Texas.

“As a faith leader, I would hope that our presence is a reflection of someone who can be trusted; someone who is looking out for the well-being and best interest of the community,” Haynes said. “We are supposed to be the standard bearers of what is moral and spiritual in society.”at a polling site, adding to nationwide reports of election-related intimidation and violence at the polls.

“Whatever the faith tradition may be, if I show up at the pole, and I see someone who I identify with, who I recognize, as someone who is of my particular tradition, that gives me confidence,” he said. “There’s just a comfort in knowing I’m not exercising this by myself.”
